Chapter Fifteen

She cuddled into his hard body, taking the comfort he offered her.

“I’m sorry I had to abandon you earlier. I needed to speak with Dylan. Skylar told me you’d come upstairs. When I came up to check on you and found you gone, I worried that you had done exactly what you did.”

“I know. I really didn’t think about it,” she said. “But I won’t do it again.”

“I believe you. Then let’s consider the disagreement over and your punishment complete. Agreed?” he asked, looking at her. She nodded. “Are you all right? Is moving you in here too fast? I don’t want you to feel pressured.”

She shook her head, smiling at him. “You don’t want me pressured but feel quite comfortable spanking me to tears? You are an odd duck. But to answer your question, quite the contrary. I had a lovely afternoon. I had a great talk with Roz. She was so easy to talk to and so willing to share. I think that’s what’s impressed me most about these women. It’s why I want to be one of them. There’s no subterfuge, no gamesmanship, just openly caring women supporting each other. Darby said that’s the real legacy of Bae Diogel. By going to different packs, they have spread that way of living… that and making sure you males don’t get any more arrogant than you already are,” she said, smiling more broadly.

“They are extraordinary women. Skylar pulled me aside as I was coming up. She told me that regardless of what you decided about becoming a wolf that I need to find a way to make it work with you. She was very impressed.”

“She’s a fan of yours, you know. Told me she was so happy to see you settling down. It seems she and Bethan have been worried about you.”

“Yes, Sky and I never made the in-law distinction. I talked to her about her island in the Outer Banks. She offered it to us before I even asked. We’d have to start from scratch.”

“I don’t mind hard work,” Maddie said quietly. “Roz says the island is beautiful, wild, and free.”

Griffin leaned down and kissed her gently, taking her hand in his. “We can build a life there.”

“We can.” Maddie took a deep breath. “I’ve made a decision about becoming a wolf. I want to do it.”

“You don’t have to, Maddie, we can make it work. I don’t know that I want to risk it.”

“Roz said she thinks it’s harder on the one who’s keeping watch. The person going through the change sleeps through most of it. They brought their physician who saw Roz and her sister through it. I think it’s better if we do it now and get it behind us. Better to be planning it than for an accident to happen and have to try to figure it out. And with trouble coming, we all need to be at our best. I think that means being a wolf.”

“You will stay out of the fighting and stay safe.
